NEGOTIATION FOR CONFLICT PREVENTION

None will be able to reach peace if unable to deal with conflict. Negotiation methods should be instruments on this quest.

SUMMER 2003 PRINCIPLES OF LABOR LAW

ARTICLE OF THE WEEK

TEAM BUILDING
A couple of many articles on the field of management. However frugal in terms of content it is presented in outline format and therein resides its convenience.

By Warren Bennis, and others (Training magazine)

WHAT WEEK?

Every individual can anticipate some consequences of the  interaction of ideas. If this happens with a purpose, for the transformation of situations, events, relationships, structures, etc. might be called called negotiation. Negotiation theories are developed within the context of conflict resolution methods. That is if we consider that the best method to deal with conflict is preventing it. Anticipation of eventual disputes compels practitioners of this disciplines to implement prudent, serious and efficient processes of negotiation, promoting concessions and satisfaction of most participant's needs.

LEARNING HOW TO BETTER NEGOTIATE IS IMPORTANT FOR YOU

This is particularly true in the area of legal practice. Lawyers and counselors that prepare negotiations for the specific needs of the client, and draft the contracts accordingly, are less likely to encounter conflicts during the performance stage.
Other academic disciplines can also benefit from courses on conciliatory attitudes and tolerance. It is the case of all the social sciences (international relations, social work, education, public relations, political sciences), and humanities (philosophy, sociology, etc).

Nobody enters into agreements in order not to comply with them but chances are that compliance will occur if the parties have been participating of the negotiation, and feel that the result will benefit all persons involved in a fair manner. The sense of fairness is what we want to create regardless the status, culture, position, profession, gender, race, or background of the participants. This requires a well designed and professionally conducted process and a method. A method will serve objectivity. It will promote understanding on the basis of objective criteria.

ETHICS

ETHICS are not a question of morality but rather practicality. They are not a concern of philosophers but the interest of the common man, the one that wants to act with integrity. The rules to follow are so natural to recognize that they come together with common sense.

Integrity is a human being's worth

Here a section on this matter will be added soon. It has been inspired on the lessons learned from  my family, appreciated professors, friends and even students acting with remarkable dignity or conversely: with unashamed mediocrity. Teaching is an invaluable learning experience.
